Tsoupakis Drummer George Tsoupakis, one of the most recorded and beloved drummers in Greek discography, was born on April 24, 1952. With roots in Crete but a life built in Athens, he was a musician who worked quietly, consistently, and with great artistic integrity.
Early Talent and Dedication
He took his first musical steps at the Philharmonic Orchestra of Agioi Anargyroi, near Petroupoli, while also studying at the local Conservatory. From a very young age, he showed remarkable talent and discipline: he began working professionally on cruise ships as a teenager, gaining experiences that shaped his entire career.
The Band “Akritas Tsoupakis Drummer
His progress was rapid. In the early 1970s, he became the drummer of Akritas, one of the most pioneering bands in Greek progressive rock. His participation in the historic album Akritas (1973) is considered pivotal, with many — including Yiannis Petridis — describing it as the greatest Greek-language rock concept album.
The story of his audition has become legendary: he was the first to sit behind the drums, and his playing was so impressive that all remaining auditions were immediately cancelled.
Beloved Drummer of Yiannis Parios
From that point on, his discography career expanded enormously. He collaborated with nearly all major Greek composers and singers of the era. His longest collaboration was with Yiannis Parios, with whom he performed for 35 consecutive years. He was also a favorite drummer of Tolis Voskopoulos, and worked with Haris Alexiou, Pitsa Papadopoulou, Eleni Vitali, Konstantina, Vasilis Papakonstantinou, Antonis Vardis, and many more. I had the honor of working with George Tsoupakis in 65 performances in Thessaloniki, at “Mesogeios,” as the sound engineer for Yiannis Parios’ show. There, I met not only a great drummer, but a man with an incredible heart. George was the soul and the pillar of the group — steady, calm, and always giving his best. For me, those 65 shows were not just work. They were a lesson. And George was one of those people you never forget.
