About the author Kostas Anastasiadis
Kostas Anastasiadis, born in Greece in 1965, is an acclaimed percussionist, composer, and educator whose life and work have been devoted to the pursuit and understanding of rhythm in its deepest dimensions. Self-taught from a young age, he began his musical journey with his first drum set at the age of thirteen, immersing himself in both traditional and contemporary ensembles. This dual immersion laid the foundation for his distinctive artistic language.
He later pursued formal studies in percussion at the renowned Music Institute (M.I.) in Los Angeles. There, under the mentorship of Ralph Humphrey, Joe Porcaro, Casey Scheuerell, and Efrain Toro, he refined his craft and developed a singular voice that led the Institute to entrust him with teaching responsibilities while still a student, an exceptional recognition.
Kostas’s groundbreaking concepts and expressive individuality attracted the recognition of legendary artists including Jack DeJohnette, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tony Williams, and Billy Higgins. In acknowledgment of his visionary contributions, M.I. established the Unique Individual Stylist Award, an honor created specifically to celebrate his singular artistic approach. Over the course of a multifaceted international career, Anastasiadis has collaborated with an impressive array of artists, including Brett Garsed, Milcho Leviev, Jimmy Mahlis, Tamir Hendelman, Oz Ezzeldin, Theodossi Spassov, Thomas Siffling, Ahmet Misirli, among others. He has appeared on prominent stages and at major festivals, including the Moers Jazz Festival, Malta Jazz Festival, Cairo Jazz Festival, NAMM Show, and the historic Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, among others.
As a bandleader, his ensembles – Kostas’s Jazz Trio, Didji-Dimensions, Enstictos, and Diaplus – serve as dynamic platforms for improvisation, intercultural dialogue, and the fusion of ancient rhythmic traditions with contemporary expression.
